2 dead in San Francisco airport crash

SAN FRANCISCO -- An Asiana Airlines flight from Seoul crashed on landing at San Francisco's airport Saturday, forcing passengers to escape the aircraft using inflatable emergency exit slides. Two people were reported killed and 61 injured.

Images from the scene showed smoke billowing from the plane and emergency exits open from the plane's fuselage, with the tail separated from the aircraft. Gaping holes could be seen in the roof of the plane's body, blackened by fire.

San Francisco Fire Department officials said two passengers were killed and 61 injured, KTVU reported.

The plane was a Boeing 777, FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford said. It crashed on runway 28L at San Francisco International Airport, he said.

There were 291 people aboard, KCBS radio reported.

Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg said in an e-mail that she was on another flight from Korea landing at San Francisco at the time.

"I was on another flight from Korea at the exact same time. We are OK. My friend on that flight is OK, too,'' Sandberg told USA TODAY.

The wreckage was sprayed with white fire retardant. Parts of the plane were scattered over a broad area, though the bulk of the plane remained in one piece.

Laura Brown, spokeswoman for the FAA in Washington, said Asiana Flight 214 from Seoul was attempting to land at San Francisco International Airport when it crashed.

"All we know is that a foreign airline, Asiana Airlines Flight 214 arriving from Seoul, South Korea, crashed while landing,'' she said. "That's all I've got right now."

She said it appeared the plane crashed after touching down for a landing, although the sequence of events was not clear.

A passenger, David Eun, tweeted after the crash: "Fire and rescue people all over the place. They're evacuating the injured. Haven't felt this way since 9/11.''

Later, Eun tweeted: "I'm fine. Most people are totally calm and trying to help. .. the majority of passengers seem OK.''

The National Transportation Safety Board was dispatching a team of crash investigators to the site. NTSB spokeswoman Kelly Nantel said board Chairman Deborah Hersman would head the team.

Boeing, manufacturer of the plane, said in a tweet from its corporate account: "Our thoughts are with everyone affected by today's incident at SFO. We stand ready to assist the NTSB.''

A graphic depicting the precise glide slope the jet followed to the runway was posted on the live flight tracking website Flightaware.com. It suggested the plane had a steeper approach angle than the same flight a day earlier.

A video clip posted to YouTube showed smoke coming from a silver-colored jet on the tarmac. Passengers could be seen jumping down the inflatable emergency slides. Images showed the the body of the plane largely intact but with severe fire damage.

The tail of the plane was separated from the aircraft. Weather at the time was clear.

The crash is the first major commercial jet to crash in the United States since a November 2001 crash in New York.

The last fatal accident involving a commercial flight in the United States was Colgan Air Flight 3407, which crashed near Buffalo, killing 50 people, on Feb. 12, 2009.

There has not been an accident involving a major domestic carrier since an American Airlines flight to the Dominican Republic crashed after takeoff in Queens in November 2001, killing all 260 people on board.

In another crash of a Boeing 777-200ER, British Airways flight 38 crashed just short of the runway at London's Heathrow airport on Jan. 17, 2008. That crash had no fatalities, but dozens were injured. That crash was blamed on ice crystals clogging the fuel line on a long flight from Beijing.

Asiana Airlines is based in Seoul. Its website says its Boeing 777 can carry between 246 to 300 passengers. Asiana flies 12 B777-200ER, a twin-engine jet produced by Boeing. The long-haul jet can fly 14 hours non-stop.

The $875.5 billion airline, established in 1988, operates 79 aircraft and flies 91 international routes to 71 cities in 23 countries.

A man who answered the phone at the airlines' Los Angeles office said the company had no comment. "We're trying to find out what happened," he said. The man declined to give his name.

The FAA investigated two accidents involving Asiana within weeks of one another in November 1998.

In the first incident, on Nov. 11, 1998, an Asiana plane with 220 passengers and 18 crew aboard skidded into a parked plane after landing at Anchorage International Airport in Alaska. Federal investigators blamed the pilot for excessive taxi speed and inadequate maneuvering to avoid the parked plane.

On Nov. 30, 1998, an Asiana cargo plane struck and toppled a crane in the safety zone next to the taxiway after it landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The FAA faulted the co-pilot for misjudging the wing's clearance.

Police say at least one person has died after a driverless train carrying light crude oil exploded in the Canadian town of Lac-Megantic.

The blast sent a fireball and black smoke into the air, forcing the evacuation of 1,000 people.

Dozens of buildings were destroyed in the town, about 250 km (155 miles) east of Montreal.

The train's 73 cars reportedly uncoupled from a parked engine and derailed early on Saturday.

Local media reported 60 people missing, although police officials have not confirmed this.

The cause of the derailment was not immediately clear.

Some 120 fire fighters have been fighting the blaze, which continued more than 12 hours after the blast.

They have been unable to approach the centre of the devastation.

Eyewitnesses reported that the town centre was crowded at the time of the blast, and that "chaos" ensued.

There is no word so far on casualties. Pictures posted on Twitter showed passengers jumping down the inflatable emergency slides and leaving the area, as plumes of smoke rise from the plane.

The aircraft operated by the South Korean airline Asiana had taken off from Seoul.

Firefighters and rescue teams are at the scene. The cause of the emergency is not known.

There were reportedly 12 crew and 290 passengers on board - the Boeing 777 can carry as many as 300 passengers.

While the sequence of events remains unclear, it appeared the plane landed and then crashed on San Francisco International Airport's Runway 28, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown.

Footage of the scene showed debris strewn on the runway and smoke pouring from the jet.

Passenger David Eun tweeted a picture of people jumping out of the plane and wrote: "I just crash landed at SFO. Tail ripped off. Most everyone seems fine. I'm ok. Surreal..."

Mr Eun, who describes himself as a "digital media guy" and "frequent flier", added: "Fire and rescue people all over the place. They're evacuating the injured. Haven't felt this way since 9/11."

A witness to the crash, Ki Siadatan, said the plane "looked out of control" as it came in to land.

"We heard a 'boom' and saw the plane disappear into a cloud of dust and smoke," he told the BBC. "There was then a second explosion."

He saw events unfold from the balcony of his home in the Millberry area of San Francisco, which overlooks the airport.

Asiana is South Korea's second-largest airline.

This is one of the first images taken by NASA's Curiosity rover, which landed on Mars on the morning of Aug. 6, 2012. It was taken through a fisheye wide-angle lens on the left "eye" of a stereo pair of Hazard-Avoidance cameras on the left-rear side of the rover. The image is one-half of full resolution. The clear dust cover that protected the camera during landing has been sprung open. Part of the spring that released the dust cover can be seen at the bottom right, near the rover's wheel.

On the top left, part of the rover's power supply is visible.

Some dust appears on the lens even with the dust cover off.

The cameras are looking directly into the sun, so the top of the image is saturated. Looking straight into the sun does not harm the cameras. The lines across the top are an artifact called "blooming" that occurs in the camera's detector because of the saturation.

As planned, the rover's early engineering images are lower resolution. Larger color images from other cameras are expected later in the week when the rover's mast, carrying high-resolution cameras, is deployed.

New Search Engine from Microsoft

Now that Microsoft's Bing Search has finally hit the streets, as an early preview to the new search engine, what do you think? I'm still not sold on the new search and I'm still finding myself going back to my old ways (Google) of searching the web.

Microsoft officially announced Bing last week at the All Things Digital conference. The new search engine was to provide us a new way of finding content on the Internet and Microsoft's hope to trump Google's old, trusted, and reliable search engine.

Bing's New Tabs
Bing was scheduled to go-live on June 3rd but apparently Microsoft wanted to give users an earlier preview of the new search. Bing users will now find tabs for "Web", "Images", "Videos", "Shopping", "Maps", and more. By clicking on "More" it will unveil "Local", "xRank", "Travel", and "News".

Bing xRank vs Google Trends
xRank is one of the tabs that most interested me. When heading to bing.com/xrank you will be presented with the most popular and gaining searches performed on Bing. This looks all so much familiar.. does Google Trend ring a bell? Nonetheless, I actually like how the data is presented but I don't like how you have to scroll through the "top search phrases" 10 at a time.

Google Trends also does a better job at providing alternate and related keyword phrases that I type in. However, I do really enjoy how xRank categories the data - perhaps more categories will be added later, or maybe we can add our own categories - that would be especially handy.

Bing Shopping vs Google Product Search
Bing Shopping has definitely changed for the better since the Live Search days. After spending a couple hours searching for different products ranking from energy bars to computer accessories, I've thoroughly enjoyed my results each and every time. when comparing Bing Search to Google's Product Search (Formally Froogle), I have to hand this one to Microsoft's Bing.

Not only did I get the results I wanted, I was presented with the data which was gathered in a much easier to read interface. I'll definitely have to use Bing search in the future for products.

Bing CashBack for Bing Shopping
Microsoft has also added what they call Bing Cashback. Bing Cashback works by giving you a certain percentage of "cash back" from certain stores online. The prices you see in Bing Shopping reflect the bottomline price you pay for the product which makes it easy to find out which are the best deals in your results. After buying your CashBack eligible product, Bing will send you your cashback amount in 60 days.

You can find a full listing of all the cash back stores here along with what percentage cash back you will receive. I think this is a nice addition to the product search that Microsoft is providing and definitely an incentive to use their product.

Bing News vs Google News
For Bing News, you'll find new features such as thumbnail video's when you hover over one. You'll also find it easier to find the news that you're looking for thanks to the new tabs and dynamic elements incorporated into Bing News. I still find Google News to have the most up-to-date news and I actually find it cleaner and easier to use IMO.

Bing Video vs You Tube?
Bing Video is really great because of the new thumbnail video feature. Try searching for E3 at Bing Video and you'll quickly see how it works. Simply hover over a video and it starts playing instantly.

This is fantastic from the consumer's point of view but what about the publisher? It's almost like Microsoft is stepping on their toes by deploying video search in this manner. Would a user still click on to the site if they can watch the whole video from within the search results? Fair use definitely comes into mind here. Perhaps there should be a 30second limitation on the "thumbnail preview"?

Legality issues aside, I really enjoy the Bing Video search - and will be using this in the future.

Bing Travel
Microsoft Bing Travel offers a lot that some of the other search engines don't such as a prediction tool that can easily predict fare prices based on averages. It also tells you flat out if you should buy your ticket today or wait a few days. We've got a full in-depth look at the Bing Travel tool here.

An Air France jet carrying 228 people from Rio de Janeiro to Paris lost contact with air traffic controllers over the Atlantic Ocean, an Air France official said on Monday.

Brazil immediately began a search mission off its northeastern coast. Air France Flight 447, an Airbus A330, was carrying 216 passengers and 12 crew members, company spokeswoman Brigitte Barrand said. The flight left Rio on Sunday at 7 p.m. local time. The plane disappeared about 190 miles (300 kilometers) northeast of the coastal Brazilian city of Natal, near the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, a Brazilian air force spokesman said. The air force began a search began Monday morning near Fernando de Noronha, he added, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with air force policy. The region is about 1,500 miles northeast of Rio. France's minister in charge of transport, Jean-Louis Borloo, said there was a "real pessimism at this hour" about the fate of the aircraft. "We can fear the worst," he said on Europe-1 radio. French President Nicolas Sarkozy expressed his "extreme worry" and sent ministers to Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport to monitor the situation. An official with France's transport agency said contact with the plane was lost at 0220 GMT Monday (10:20 p.m. EDT Sunday). Barrand said the airline installed an information center at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport for the families of those aboard. "Air France regrets to announce that it is without news from Air France flight 447 flying from Rio to Paris," she said. "Air France shares the emotion and worry of the families concerned." The flight was scheduled to arrive in Paris at 0915 GMT (5:15 a.m. EDT), according to the airport. Airbus declined to comment until more details emerge.
